Rúnar Rúnarsson Born: 20.01.77 in Reykjavík / Iceland

A graduate from the Directors line of  The National Film School of Denmark, 2005 – 2009.

The debut feature film premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes 2011 with VOLCANO, nominated for the Camera d'Or. The film screened at a large number of festivals and won multiple international awards.

His sophomore feature SPARROWS started its impressive festival run by winning the Concha de Oro, Main Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival. Since then, it has collected multiple international awards.

3rd feature film, ECHO, was selected for Cannes Artelier.  World premiered in Locarno 2019 and has been honored with international awards.

4th feature film, WHEN THE LIGHT BREAKS, was the opening film of  Un Certain Regard in Cannes 2024 and has since then been honored with multiple awards.

His Crossroads trilogy of Short films received around 100 international film awards. THE LAST FARM was nominated for an Oscar in 2006, 2 BIRDS was nominated for Palme d´Or at Cannes  2008, and the European Film Awards the same year.

Rúnar returned to the short film format with O ( Circle), which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2024. The film has traveled well and received multiple awards.
